Medran talks rugby and the Olympics
YMCA of South Alabama hosted a free Rookie Rugby clinic last month, bringing over 60 participants and counselors together to learn more about the newest Olympic sport. The attendees had an opportunity last month to learn Rookie Rugby from one of the best, Brandy Medran, Youth Development Coordinator for USA Rugby. Medran spent over two hours with the participants, on a scorching summer morning, teaching the basic principles of Rookie Rugby and demonstrating to the staff rugby's numerous benefits. The introduction was well-received by all, and the YMCA of South Alabama has now added Flag Rugby to their Fall programming. A huge thanks to Christina Jones of YSAL for helping the kids GIVE RUGBY A TRY! YMCA of South Alabama Flag Rugby League Registration: September 9th- October 25th Season: November 11th - December 21, 2013 Cost: $50 members/$80 non members You can register at the Hearin Chandler YMCA branch on Downtowner Blvd. Mon-Friday 8:30 am to 7:00 pm. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to get involved with our new program. You don't have to be a rugby expert, we will offer training to all who wants to learn. For more information on youth rugby, please visit www.mobilerugby.org. Daphne's Al Trione Sports Complex will be the site of the South Alabama's first-up Rookie Rugby league, Jubilee Flag Rugby. Boys and girls ages 7 to 14 will compete in a non-contact, flag environment while learning the world's newest Olympic sport. Rookie Rugby offers two distinct advantages over other team sports: 1) a lack of designated positions, and 2) every player is involved in every play. The continuity of the game helps improve fitness while providing a safe environment for our youth. All of our coaches meet or exceed the standards set by rugby's governing body in the U.S., USA Rugby. Rookie Rugby offers kids and parents a new challenge and an introduction to the newest Olympic sport. For more information on the host organization, please visit Mobile Area Rugby Foundation, and Rookie Rugby for more information on the specifics of the game. Mobile Youth Rugby will host an informational meeting at Trione Park on April 6 from 9 am to 12 pm, where on-site registration will be available. Online registration will open March 2, 2013 and close April 5. Please visit allplayers.com for online registration. If you have questions or would like more information on how you or your kids can get involved in youth rugby, please contact the Foundation directors Robert Corley at 251.272.1058, Charles Dube at 251.422.5698 or email [email protected].
Representatives from the Mobile Area Rugby Foundation will attend the 2013 USA Rugby Summit this weekend in southern California. Costa Mesa, CA will play host to this year's conference offering the attendees a much anticipated weekend of sunshine and networking. The National Development Summit is the premier developmental conference for rugby in the U.S., and the timing could not be better for Mobile Rugby. The Foundation has set its sights on April 2013 as the target start date for youth flag leagues in Mobile and Daphne. The previous years' summits and conferences we have attended offer Mobile Rugby the advantage of connecting with other administrators around the country who have matured through the same progressions, faced the same challenges, and achieved success in much the same way. We are fortunate to attend this conference annually as it provides a better understanding of the Best Practices necessary to insure a safe and fun environment for youth physical activity.
