Mobile Area Youth Rugby will host another information session at Al Trione Sports Complex on April 20th from 9 am to 12 pm. Directors and coaches will be on-hand to provide details on the upcoming Jubilee Flag Rugby League, as well as, accept in-person registration. For more information, please visit our league management page or call/email us. We look forward to seeing kids on the Eastern Shore give Rugby a TRY! Daphne's Al Trione Sports Complex will be the site of the South Alabama's first-up Rookie Rugby league, Jubilee Flag Rugby. Boys and girls ages 7 to 14 will compete in a non-contact, flag environment while learning the world's newest Olympic sport. Rookie Rugby offers two distinct advantages over other team sports: 1) a lack of designated positions, and 2) every player is involved in every play. The continuity of the game helps improve fitness while providing a safe environment for our youth. All of our coaches meet or exceed the standards set by rugby's governing body in the U.S., USA Rugby. Rookie Rugby offers kids and parents a new challenge and an introduction to the newest Olympic sport. For more information on the host organization, please visit Mobile Area Rugby Foundation, and Rookie Rugby for more information on the specifics of the game. Mobile Youth Rugby will host an informational meeting at Trione Park on April 6 from 9 am to 12 pm, where on-site registration will be available. Online registration will open March 2, 2013 and close April 5. Please visit allplayers.com for online registration. If you have questions or would like more information on how you or your kids can get involved in youth rugby, please contact the Foundation directors Robert Corley at 251.272.1058, Charles Dube at 251.422.5698 or email [email protected].
Representatives from the Mobile Area Rugby Foundation will attend the 2013 USA Rugby Summit this weekend in southern California. Costa Mesa, CA will play host to this year's conference offering the attendees a much anticipated weekend of sunshine and networking. The National Development Summit is the premier developmental conference for rugby in the U.S., and the timing could not be better for Mobile Rugby. The Foundation has set its sights on April 2013 as the target start date for youth flag leagues in Mobile and Daphne. The previous years' summits and conferences we have attended offer Mobile Rugby the advantage of connecting with other administrators around the country who have matured through the same progressions, faced the same challenges, and achieved success in much the same way. We are fortunate to attend this conference annually as it provides a better understanding of the Best Practices necessary to insure a safe and fun environment for youth physical activity.

Congratulations to The Rock School on becoming the first school in Mobile County to successfully complete the Rookie Rugby learning module this afternoon. This afternoon capped over 10 weeks of modules and skills sessions, culminating a final 7's-style, flag rugby match. 14 young boys and girls courageously tackled a new sport as the toook the field this afternoon for 2 7-minutes halves of non-contact, flag rugby, the only goals being to have fun, stay safe, and play rugby! A sign of true sportsmanship, both sides were happy to call an end to the match at a 7-7 draw. Congratulations again to The Rock School for your courage and participation. See you on the pitch! This is a fantastic achievement for Rugby Alabama and Mobile Rugby. The State of Alabama Dept of Education has approved the Rookie Rugby curriculum for immediate implementation. This is the first step in getting a rugby ball in the hands of every 5th-8th grader in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Our goal is to have the curriculum rolled out system-wide within the next 12 months. In partnership withe the Mobile Sports Authority and Rugby Alabama, we are working towards our goal of raising $10,000 to fund the program. We need your help! Consider donating today. $10 will purchase a ball for a school and $100 will buy a complete kit for one school. We are a 501(c) 3 designated charity, which means all donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the current tax laws. Check our our Donate page for how to make a charitable contribution. Thanks for your support.
Right off of a stellar performance in Birmingham in June’s Alabama State Games, where they took silver, Battleship Men’s took home the top place in the Hammond 7′s tournament in southeast Louisiana this past weekend. Hammond Daily Star ran the following article:
Battleship tops LSU in Hammond rugby tourney, Monday, August 22, 2011 8:10 PM CDT More than 180 players participated in the 5th annual Hammond Hot August 7s Rugby Tournament at Fagan Fields in Hammond Saturday. The annual event sponsored by the Tangipahoa Parish Tourist Commission, Downtown Development District and the Deep South Rugby Referee Society attracted a crowd of more than 500 during a full day of rugby action. The action began as the Hammond Black Lions took the field against Baton Rouge in a hotly contested match that ended in Baton Rouge’s favor. In the second match, ultimate tournament champion Battleship from Mobile (Ala.) knocked off reigning champion Louisiana-Lafayette 28-24 by scoring the final “try” with no time remaining on the clock. Denham Springs fell to Loyola 7-0 in what proved to be one of the most dramatic defensive efforts of the day. Four teams advanced to the championship bracket that concluded the day’s play. In the first championship match, Battleship defeated Mandeville 21-19. LSU advanced to the championship match in the second bracket by defeating Mississippi State 5-12. The tension was thick as LSU and Battleship clashed for the tournament championship that resulted in a Battleship victory 22-19. Twelve teams from across the Gulf South participated this year in what is expected to emerge as one of the largest rugby tournaments in the region said tournament organizers from the Hammond Area Rugby Federation (HARF). Tournament chairman Sam Hyde noted that space limitations forced HARF to cap the number of teams that could participate this year. “The city of Hammond generously allowed us use of the Fagan Fields but after surveying their condition we realized that we could only safely use one field and thus we had to tell many teams that tried to register late that we could not accommodate them this year,” Hyde said. A crack team of referees supplied by the Deep South Rugby Society under the direction of chief referee Steve Parrill kept the tight tournament schedule on time and free of problems. A pub crawl organized by HARF committee member Jason Mapp, brought the participants and families to downtown Hammond following the tournament for a night of food and fun. During the 1970s and ‘80s, Hammond was home to the largest rugby tournament in North America. More than 80 teams from around the world participated in the annual Mardis Gras tournament which was held on the grounds of the Hammond Airport. A shortage of hotel space and other accommodations led to the demise of the Mardis Gras tournament. The Hot August 7s tournament represents an effort to bring large scale international rugby back to a new Hammond replete with abundant hotel space and restaurants. “We are determined to see this tournament serve as a catalyst to bring international caliber rugby back to Hammond, the generous support we have received from our sponsors and the community will make it easy to do,” said Hyde. Mobile Rugby, in partnership with Rugby Alabama, presented the Rookie Rugby curriculum to a physical educators conference in Columbiana this week. Thanks to all the facilitators and participants. This is a great opportunity, and a great time, to bring Rookie Rugby to the young students in our community. If you are interested in bringing Rugby to your school. church, or after-school program, please contact us.
